Oral Board Review

During the process of becoming hired at a law enforcement agency or police department, a recruit will have to enter an interview room where they will be interviewed by a panel of superiors from within the agency. This is known as the Oral Board interview.

The purpose of this class is to prepare candidates to succeed when their time for this type of stressful interview arrives.

Each candidate will be coached on how to dress, address members of the panel, and generally conduct themselves in a professional manner in which they are able to verbalize their answers to questions and sound articulate.

During the typical oral board exam, a candidate should expect to see the Chief of the agency right down the through the ranks including the captains, lieutenants, sergeants, detectives, and/or other members. They will dress in their best in regular dress uniforms and will put on their most professional appearance.

The interview can take place in a variety of settings depending on what resources the agency has available to them. It is usually conducted in either a meeting room within the police department, courtroom of the municipality, or possibly the municipal building in the Mayor and councils chambers, or just about anywhere else.

Wherever it takes place, you should expect the police panel to sit side by side in a row in front of the candidate. However the setup, the candidate will be seated at a distance from the panel and will have all eyes on him/her!

It is generally an uncomfortable and high stress experience for the potential recruit. Often times, candidates stutter, stammer, and visibly sweat their way through easy questions regarding their past history and experiences.

Hypothetical and situational law enforcement questions will sometimes be posed to the candidate whether or not the candidate has ever had any prior law enforcement experience or not just to measure their ability to provide intelligent answers.

The purpose for this interview is for the panel to make an assessment of the applicants personality, integrity, morals, and demeanor. While this is a daunting task for the candidate, the Oral Board Interview is also equally daunting to the law enforcement agency.

While the candidate is trying to answer questions and score the highest amount of points, the panel of police officials are trying to decide which candidate is best for their agency. They are also analyzing the candidate in order to determine which candidates might be lying, unethical or immoral, and which ones have the highest levels of integrity. Hence the extra push to pressure the candidates into displaying their true colors.

In this group exercise, candidates will learn the proper interview techniques.

  1. They will learn how to dress
  2. How to respond and conduct themselves in their verbal responses to difficult questions
  3. How to control mannerisms during an interview.
  4. How to formulate detailed answers and convey their personal strengths.
  5. Proper etiquette upon entering and exiting interview.

Group Firearms Instruction

Limited to 5 students

Within the NJ police academy curriculum, it is mandated by state law that each recruit must reach a minimum level of accuracy during firearms training.

In each and every police academy recruit class, it is almost guaranteed that a small percentage of recruits will fail out of the academy due to the inability to accurately fire a semi-automatic 9mm or 40 cal. handgun.

Do not wait until you are about to enter the police academy to find out if this is an area that will come easy for you. Train on an official shooting range with a NJ certified Police Firearms Instructor.

In this group meeting, each candidate will learn to fire a semi-automatic handgun with a basic level of accuracy. This instruction is the same as the Private lessons that are also offered, however, the students will receive a reduced rate due to the group setting.

The main difference is while the training session will last longer, you will have the advantage of watching, listening, and learning from the instruction given to the other members of your group. (Very Beneficial!)

You will be supervised and trained on how to safely handle, load, and fire a handgun.

This training is a great way to get on a range and practice shooting without having to buy your own handgun and join a range. All supplies will be provided for you including targets, ammunition, eye and ear protection.

Prior to your time out on the range, you will receive a video DVD introducing your instructor. He will introduce you to the range that you will be training at and demonstrating the Safety Policy.

You will be advised and critiqued on your skills and abilities as to whether you are on the right track to potentially passing the firearms curriculum in an approved police academy.

This private session will accomplish the goal of getting you to a range and becoming familiar with operation and use of a standard police weapon.

After your first initial lesson, you may come back at any time for additional training in the future. Your instructor will work with you on whichever areas you need improvement. The ultimate goal is for you to undergo a standard police officer qualification course in which you will fire several rounds (approx. 60 shots) at various distances from the target and maintain a passing score.

Lesson objectives:

  1. Basic Safety: Range rules and weapon handling.
  2. How to operate the weapon: Learn to disassemble weapon and understand various working parts.
  3. Site Alignment: How to align weapons sites with center of target.
  4. Practice firing: Fire weapon with efforts to correct any bad habits or problems with hitting target accurately.
  5. Academy Training: Overview of firearms training in the police academy and what you can expect during the training.

Title 2C/Title 39 Legal Review

This class is open to anyone wishing to attend, however, it is most directed towards Regular Police Officers, Special Officers Class I and II, Alternate Route, and Auxiliary Police Officer candidates.

N.J.S.A Title 2C is a where you will find the majority of NJs criminal statutes. N.J.S.A Title 39 is where the majority of motor vehicle statutes are found.

Both of these titles are taught in the police academy to Law Enforcement Officers. Due to the complexities in both areas, it is important to stay current and update with changes in the law along with Attorney General policy and guideline changes in order to effectively perform your job and allow your cases to successfully go through the court system without falling apart.

Additionally, competition for Full Time Regular Police Officer positions is at an all time high. Candidates with previous law enforcement training should expect to be held to a higher standard and will usually be asked challenging questions regarding conduct out in the field while conforming/adhering to the law in job interviews.

Dont hesitate and stammer in Oral Board Interviews when being asked the difficult questions!

This re-refresher class will concentrate on the following areas:
  1. Search and seizure
  2. Drug Arrests
  3. Domestic Violence
  4. Mandatory Arrest Circumstances
  5. Motor Vehicle Stops
  6. Current Motor Vehicle Laws
  7. Attorney General Directives
  8. Case Law

Police Testing Study Course

This course is designed to help you achieve the highest results possible when taking NJ law enforcement exams.

There are 2 different distinctions between tests in NJ.

The first type of test is the Entry Level Law Enforcement Exam administered every two years by the NJ Civil Service Commission formerly known as the Department of Personnel (DOP).

This exam is administered every other year sometime in the Spring. The announcement date is usually no later than the beginning of December with the next announcement being sometime around December of 2009 with the results become available sometime in the following Fall.

Any Civil Service agency that looks to fill a vacant position receives a list from the Civil Service Commission with the names and scores of the passing candidates that meet the residency requirements to be considered.

Being that the "list" is good for two years before expiring, it is very important to obtain a high score on this test so you can have the best chances possible for landing a position during life of the list.

All State and County law enforcement agencies with the exception of Somerset County government, hire from this type of test. Select municipalities located throughout the rest of the state are also designated Civil Service. For a complete listing, you can review the link on this website for the Agency Profiles Page which highlights Civil Service Agencies.

The other type of test that is administered in NJ is commonly referred to as a Chief's test. This name is given to any other type of test that is either given by a specific municipality in order to fill an open position. Sometimes, police academies administer this type of test as a service to the agencies in their area as well as to select students for the Alternate Route program.

As a result, every police officer that makes motor vehicle stops needs to be trained and familiar with the practice of exercising the best procedures and tactics for dealing with the unknown. This is the only way to combat the potential for disaster that occurs each time a police officer engages in a motor vehicle stop.

It is up to the individual municipalities whether or not to use the test results from a county police academy test, or whether to administer their own test.

The type of tests that are administered through Chiefs' tests vary. There are several different testing companies that are contracted to either author and print the exams as well as to administer and score them, again, depending on the wishes of the municipality that is hiring and sponsoring the exam.

There are 2 different courses within this course for the two different types of exams. Course dates and times including a more detailed description for each class will be announced shortly after the release of the book sold on this website.

High Risk Motor Vehicle Stops

High Risk, Felony, and Routine Motor Vehicle Stop Instruction and Re-Fresher Course

Random motor vehicle stops for minor traffic violations and higher risk motor vehicle stops involving recent felons on the run are never routine and are ALWAS dangerous! Officer safety is the #1 goal and in order to be safe while performing motor vehicle stops requires training and practice, skill, and confidence on the part of a police officer.

This hands-on field training further instructs you on how to perform in a safe manner and how to always be prepared for the unknown!

During this class you will receive instruction from certified expert police instructors that specialize in the art motor vehicle stops. They bring years of experience and knowledge of the best and safest ways to conduct traffic stops in this 2 day class.

Learn from experts in law enforcement as they demonstrate the best techniques you can use during motor vehicle stops. Student participation is required while instructors role play and challenge students during traffic stops as they would be in real life situations.

Just as in your original training, you will approach a car driven by expert instructor bad guys that will put you through the ultimate worse case scenarios as you attempt to approach their vehicle. You will receive expert instruction that provides step-by-step instruction on how to perform the stop as safely as possible.

During your scenarios, you will perform various kinds of stops using different techniques. These include felony stop drills where the suspects you pull over will be assumed to have just committed serious felony crimes.

Motor Vehicle stops are one of the many tough job functions that a police officer engages during a patrol shift because strategically the officers safety is disadvantaged from the beginning. During a routine motor vehicle stop the following set of circumstances exists:

  1. The approaching police officer cannot be sure how many occupants are in the vehicle
  2. The approaching officer has a holstered weapon. The vehicle occupants may have loaded ready-to-go weapons which cannot be easily seen even after reaching the windows of the vehicle which may or may not be tinted.
  3. The vehicle occupants are surrounded by the cover of a motor vehicle which would protect them in a gun fight. The officer only has a bullet proof vest covering the upper torso and no immediate cover.
  4. The occupants have the element of surprise on their side. Most motor vehicle stops do not result in gunshots. The occupants of this vehicle may already have intentions of shooting the next cop that stops them. They may be wanted criminals that are headed to jail once apprehended. Therefore, they know what is about to happen, the police officer doesnt.

As a result, every police officer that makes motor vehicle stops needs to be trained and familiar with the practice of exercising the best procedures and tactics for dealing with the unknown. This is the only way to combat the potential for disaster that occurs each time a police officer engages in a motor vehicle stop.

This class is offered to anyone with previous law enforcement training from a police academy in NJ or out of state.
